Madame
Alexander Doll
Madame
Alexander was the daughter of Russian immigrants. She was raised
over her father's doll hospital, which was the first in America.
She and her three sisters often played with the dolls waiting to
be mended and they made handmade cloth dolls. This love of dolls
led Madam Alexander to create her own line of porcelain dolls
and found the Alexander
Doll Company more than 75 years ago.
Although
she may be best known for producing fine quality, handcrafted
dolls, Madame Alexander is also credited with a series of firsts
in the toy industry:
- the
first to create a doll based on a licensed character (Scarlett
O’Hara), which led to the creation of dolls based on
characters from popular motion pictures;
- the
first to create dolls in honor of living people (including
Queen Elizabeth and the Dionne Quintuplets); and
- the
first to introduce a full-figured fashion doll (Cissy 21)
with haute couture outfits, which allowed her to design doll
clothing to rival that worn by the day’s latest fashion
models.
Madam
Alexander based her dolls on literary characters as well as
living celebrities. In addition to Scarlett from “Gone With
the Wind,” Madame Alexander also created a line of dolls based
on the characters from the film classic “The Sound of Music.”
The Little Women doll series, based on Louisa May Alcott’s
novel of the same name, maintains its popularity today. Fairy
tale favorites include Cinderella, Snow White and Goldilocks.
Madame Alexander also released a First Ladies doll series and
even a First Family series featuring dolls bearing the likeness
of Jacqueline and Caroline Kennedy.
Madame
Alexander died in 1990; however, the Alexander Doll Company
continues to produce a full line of collectible dolls, baby
dolls and play dolls today.
The
Doll Market carries an extensive line of Madam Alexander doll
collectibles, including Cissy dolls, Little Woman dolls, doll
clothing, original dolls, sale dolls, porcelain doll clothing
and accessories.
The
Doll Market is the Madame Alexander Doll Company's "Dealer
